What it measures
The change in retailers' revenue over a period. The headline US measure is in current prices, so sales growth may partly reflect higher prices.
Why traders follow it
Check the country and whether the measure covers total sales or excludes certain categories. Revisions can change the assessment of consumer strength.
Check the country, period and source. A single value or regime label does not determine a trade's direction.
